Missing your vehicle registration renewal in California might seem like no big deal—until the penalties start stacking up. A late renewal can quickly turn into a costly headache, and in some cases, it could even result in a ticket or vehicle impound.
When Is My Registration Due?
In California, your vehicle registration is due every year, typically on the same day each year that your vehicle was first registered. The California DMV sends a renewal notice about 60 days before your due date.
If you didn’t receive your notice or aren’t sure of your expiration date, you can still find it:
- On your current registration card
- On your license plate sticker
- Online at the California DMV website
Important: There is no grace period in California. Once your registration expires, late penalties begin the next day.
